Allowing myself time when editing for the first time

You may have caught my sneak peek preview of me recording RimWorld, and right now I’m in the process of editing it.
The goal is to create some decent bite-size episodes of about 30min, and then share it with you all over time. I spent a whole week with every night recording, and it was kind of intense. That said, recording makes RimWorld run a lot slower, so I didn’t necessarily get very far each night.

I could see that there was an eagerness within myself to rush to get something out, but then I realize that in order for me to continue enjoying and getting back into editing I need to let myself take the time it needs.
For a few reasons:
1. I’m learning a new editing software, kdenlive. The last one I’ve been familiar with, before CapCut on the phone in recent months, was Avid about 17 years ago when I was at school studying film and editing. It’s been a while.
2. I’m getting used to the different tools available within that editing software, and have big chunks of video to log.
3. I want to just enjoy the process.

I realize that this means it’ll take y’all a bit longer to actually get something, but hopefully I can provide some sneak-peaks and some insightful texts like this in the meanwhile.

If it’s any consolation I will most likely be editing one episode at the time, and then schedule them or publish them as they are done. If I finish a lot in a short time span, I will of course try to space them out at some decent interval.

Thank you for your patience with me as I struggle with my health, and mental health levels over the past few years. I’m glad you’re here, and that we’re embarking on a new journey and chapter together!

Day 6: Cats, caravans and chaos

5th of Septober, Spring, 5510. Psychic Rain

Cannon’s journal

I found a wounded cat today. While I was carrying him back I noticed something was going on back at our barracks. A trader was visiting, but they were fighting something or someone. Apparently some raiders from the Stabber Party decided to welcome us to the neighborhood, apparently you can’t catch a break anywhere in this godforsaken world.

The traders managed to fight off 2 of them, while I was carrying the cat back. The trader lost one of their people and one of their muffalos and two boomrats, I’m glad it was raining. Our walls seem intact. I tried my best to patch him up. I’ve decided to name him Jackson.

I looked out through the door and noticed that two more bandit raiders were making their way to our barrack. While I was looking down my sights Ralph went charging straight at one of them. He got shot 4 times, and they kicked at him. He was downed…

I had to retreat back into the barrack, and figure out how to deal with them. The rain really makes it harder to aim. As soon as they got in the door they noticed the luciferium on the floor, and picked it up to run away with. I knew that this was my chance, when the muffalo went down outside it had dropped a psychic insanity lance, and I knew that if I could get to it in time, I may be able to distract them enough to save my supplies.

I don’t know what it is about pirates like these but, they quickly get distracted by booty and ignore people around them even if they are about to get hurt. I’ve seen them run straight over traps, with no regard to their own life. But we didn’t have any traps. I made it around the corner of the house, picked up the insanity lance and moved around the building, I figured I could cut into their path and reach them faster if I went around entirely on the north side of the building rather than going back around the south side, as I could tell they were heading west. The lance lived up to its name, as it hit the first raider they immediately dropped the luci, turned around and attacked their companion, who just kept moving. I was in a good position to shoot them with my sniper rifle, even in the rain, my shooting skills are fairly accurate. I aimed for the one making a beeline for the forest edge first. That forest is too thick to follow anyone through. And I figured it was my best shot. I downed him on my second shot. Now it was time to deal with the confused one. They hadn’t redirected their rage towards me or anyone else yet, so I could slowly take my aim. I hit them in the chest, and they went down.

Now Ralph, was he alright? I picked up the luciferium, to get it out of the rain, and dropped it off inside, ran straight for Ralph who was on the other side of the building. I assessed the damaged and figured that I could carry him inside to patch him up. He wasn’t bleeding too badly, but if I had let him be he would’ve bled out over night, no doubt.

I checked in on Jackson again, he seemed to be doing alright.

Our guests however. Two of them started fighting and wouldn’t stop until one of them went down, unfortunately the one who started the fight went to fight someone else as well. I shouldn’t have taken in guests before I had proper lodging set up for them, but I really wanted the company.

Phew. It’s been a long day. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, I managed to set up a little kitchen corner, so Von Napier can cook us some nice meals tomorrow. I really don’t know how to cook, but at least I can build things.

I hope the rain will let up soon.

Luxemburg’s Journal

We continued all the way north, as far as the staked out path would take us, before we have to go off into the part of the Oomera Forest that rests between Rhino Chestnut Swamp and Tona Wetlands, two swamps we want to avoid crossing if we can. We reached Waroon, a Butistan village, at the end of the path, and got a chance to rest.

The limited information they had about the drop pod seems to indicate that it is indeed somewhere beyond Rhino Chestnut Swamp, and they figured that it’d be best for us to continue north-northwest until we hit the next staked out path. It’s not even any old asphalt roads there, just dirt paths made by caravans taking those paths over the years. They said that if we continue following that path we’ll eventually meet a bend of an asphalt road, and in that bend there should be another village. If they didn’t see the drop pod go beyond them, we can begin to triangulate where Cannon and Von Napier set up camp.

We’re staying here until tomorrow, then we’re getting a move on, we need to cross two rivers, and by the third we should find the path. I hope no predators find us first. It should take us about two days to reach the 3rd river, then we can rest again before moving further on following the road.

Day 5: Pursuit

4th of Septober, Spring, 5510. Psychic Rain

Luxemburg’s diary

We left around 7h this morning, all packed, brought some items to sell. Once the rage was over, the hunter in me kicked in. We have to be smart and strategic and pick up supplies where we can.

We know the pod went north of us towards Rhino Chestnut Swamp, maybe even beyond. We haven’t tracked much that way, but are hoping that our closest neighbors can help us with some more info about the region. Omeera Forest is big, and we definitely won’t be able to cover it all on our own.

If we’re lucky maybe one of our neighbors will have some luci too. Bless your lucky comet, maybe a meteorite will fall and bring us something good to sell.

[…]

We made it to our closest neighbor, from the Black Horse Maca, by 13h. For a second there I thought they wanted to sell us luci, but no they wanted to buy our luci, our very limited supply. We only have one dose each left… ugh. The last they can do is offer us a better price if they want it so badly.

We managed to unload some of the heavier things we were carrying. Apparently Speedy had the bright idea to bring a large marble statue with us. It fetched us a pretty penny, but not as much as that Masterwork Jade statute Cannon stole from the colony. Okay, technically it was made by Von, they can do whatever they want with it I guess, but couldn’t they have taken only that and not the luci as well?

I wonder if we can stretch our luci rations a bit further. Is it worth the risk?

We also sold a bunch of Human leather dusters, even the merely good ones fetch some decent change. I still don’t understand how we ended up with so much human leather, no one has cut me into any human meat action, it just keeps going to the animals in their kibble. A waste if you ask me, they would make lovely lavish meals. If only I knew how to cook.

We took a small break before heading off to the next neighboring colony, asked around but no one seemed to know where the drop pod had landed. We ‘re following the river north. This is probably one of the worst parts to get through, yet it’s faster than going around, so we have to do it.

[…]

By 17h we had made it through the path skirting along the river to the next trading partner. Picked up some extra travel rations, got rid of some more junk, but found no luci. Unfortunately they didn’t seem to know anything about the drop pods either. So I guess we just got to keep moving. We can probably make it to the 3rd encampment before nightfall.

21h, we made it. And again they wanted to buy our luciferium, not sell any. I decided to unload the Thrumbo horns, get extra food rations again, and pick up some extra medicine, because I’ve never gone the way we’re going, and who knows what’s out there waiting to attack us. We’re a fairly small caravan so we should go unnoticed for the most part, but it’s hard to know when it’s raining like this. We also kept the hospital beds we brought with us, hoping maybe Cannon would trade it for half the luci, at least.

Cannon’s Diary

Still pouring down. How many days of rain is this? I really wish my duster and cowboy hat would protect me better from the rain, but this just seems to soak straight through. It’s hard to see what I’m doing, and work is really slow. We almost have a barracks set up now. I need to salvage some more steel for the door so we can keep the heat in. I saw some more ruins in the distance when we arrived, so I’m going to go scout them out today.

I think the weather and the cold got to Von Napier, they have not been themselves today. Just wandering in the rain, not really doing anything. I tried to calm them down but it seems to have had no effect. Maybe one of the animals can snap them out of it with some cuddles, I know that always helps me.

We also got our first set of visitors, and we don’t even have any guest-beds yet. I didn’t expect anyone to come visit us, especially so soon, maybe it helped that we went trading in the area before we settled down. Time to find us some extra beds.

Day 4: Settling & They Stole Our Luci

3rd of Septober, Spring, 5510. Psychic Rain

Cannon’s Diary:

We found a plot of land that we want to call our own. We haven’t decided on how much we want to stay in touch with the others yet. I think I’ll let Von have the final say, as they were kind enough to come with me on this adventure.

I hope they won’t be too mad we left without saying anything though. Anyways, I got some work to do. Talk to you later.

[…]

Today was one wet, but productive day. The purple rain is still pouring down and I can feel the life being sapped out of me. Surely I’m just imagining things?
First when we arrived we were just so tired that we dropped everything right where we sat down in the rain. Then we realized what a mistake that was and packed everything up again to move into the ruins we found. It has a magnificent stele in it. and we figured if we put up some temporary roofing we may actually be safe from the rain tonight.

We managed to set up tables to eat, and I built us a stool each, it was the only thing we could do with the materials we had at hand. I also managed to gather some extra wood while building the roof, so we could make a torch, glad that there were trees here, could’ve gone much worse otherwise.

Von Napier is fast asleep in their bedroll, but I’m still laying awake thinking about the deep conversation we had about how long it will take for us to get our own private bedrooms. I really miss having a lush impressive bedroom, but right now, I guess this will have to do. Wait, why did we sell that marvelous statue?

Tomorrow I need to go hunting, I saw some guinea pigs close to camp. If we want to make food, and a little bit of money guinea pigs is the way to go. When we’ve settled in hopefully I can get some time to tailor something nice out of the fur.

Luxenburg’s Diary:

Fuck, they took our Luciferium. We had managed to save up 20 doses each, that would last us for two years, and without it we will surely perish. Fuck. FUCK! We should’ve locked it behind a wall somewhere, kept a season’s worth of doses on us. But no, we kept it in the storage room, next to the Penoxycyline.

Me, Speedy and Croiro have to go get it, or at least some of it back. I don’t want to have to fight any of them, they are still part of this faction, but if I have to I will kill them both, even sweet innocent Von Napier. Do they even know that Cannon took it?

Fuck them. Gotta shoot a message to the caravan to be on the lookout for more luci as well.

Day 3: Packing

2nd of Septober, Spring, 5510

Considering how well leaving went last time, I don’t want to get my hopes up today.

Me and Von started packing. Filling two pods, took the puppies which haven’t bonded with anyone yet, so I’m hoping they could become good companions and help protect Von Napier when they are walking the grounds. If we have grounds. We don’t even know where we’re going yet.

I wanted to leave in the dead of night, while only Kristina, Speedy and Dougherty were awake, but this morning seems as good as any.

During the night Selma got to bring back Kia, which is sweet. I still remember their wedding like it was yesterday. They had their wedding called off twice because we were getting attacked.

It’s not going to be easy out here, but I feel like our big colony just painted such a big target on our backs.

I don’t even know if I’m going to cut everyone out, or if we’re staying in touch, staying connected. Why is it so difficult to leave people behind?

While we were packing no one seems to pay no mind to it, we send out so many drop pod deliveries every few days that this one doesn’t seem to be out of the ordinary, I guess?

I’m almost feeling guilty, but there’s no way to tell 40 people that you’re leaving that won’t be awkward.

We successfully shot off, we went by another village to trade. Sold the statute Von had made before we left, maybe we should have kept it.

Some strange purple rain has begun falling, I’m not sure what that’s about.

Day 2: Poor Ralph

1st of Septober, Spring, 5510.

Ralph is my precious donkey. He’s been with me for as long as I can remember.. He was ravaged by Garza while they were performing a standard procedure, giving him a peg leg instead of his broken hoof. I was hoping it would help him walk better and be generally happier.

He’s been a bit weak since we tried to fix his bad back with a new spine. I didn’t know the doctor was going to give him a simple prosthetic. I thought he could get bionics, like the other animals around here. It seems like donkeys are beneath the bionics makers. IF THEY CAN DO IT WITH HORSES WHY NOT DONKEYS?!

Yes, I’m upset. I wanted to make life better for Ralph, not worse.

Anyways, I’ve had enough of this place. And since Camaban broke up with me, there’s nothing really tying me and Ralph to this place any more, except for my best friend. I asked Von Napier if they would run away with me, they said they had a project they wanted to complete first. Apparently divine inspiration only lasts for so long, and I’ve always loved the art they create, so I can’t say no to that can I.

We’re leaving, and I need to start thinking about what we want to bring with us.

Day 1: We’re leaving

15th of Jugust, Winter, 5510.

I can’t believe we’re doing this. Me and Camaban have been married for a long while, and yes, we’ve enjoyed it here, we just have this want to build something for yourselves. So, we’re packing up in the middle of the night to leave. We’re going as far away as the pod launchers can take us, and taking some chosen things with us. I’ll let you know more after we’ve landed.

[…]

Tonight couldn’t have gone more wrong than it did. I never expected Camaban to break up with me. While we were packing they told me they this wasn’t working any more, and me killing Nina was the last straw.

I know, I know that I killed their kin, but they attacked us. It wasn’t my fault. I didn’t think they’d leave me over it.

I understand that they are outside of themselves with grief, and I feel bad for what I did, but should I have let Nina kill me instead? It was really me or them.

I’m still at the colony, I couldn’t leave alone. I don’t know what I’ll do now.
